  • S2KCA-LA and EOQ Drive group weekend in the Sequoias Sept 2018

    UPDATED AUG 6, 2018:
NOTE: Attendees will need National Parks Passes for this trip. There are fees involved. Scroll down to post # 4 for details.

Also NOTE: We have a no flake rule in place for this event. Do not rsvp and say you are going and then not show up.

Here is the plan so far:
On Saturday morning Sep 22, depart from the Hilton Garden Inn, Bakersfield, CA, and head up Highways 178 and 155 toward Kernville. We will then take the scenic path (Mountain Highway 99, M50, M90, 190, M296, and 198) into Three Rivers. This is where those who want to camp can rent space and set up. Michael Yoo has kindly offered to haul camping equipment up in his Tacoma. Details on that will be worked out mostly by Michael Yoo. Those not camping (that would be me!) will head to the Fairfield Inn in Visalia.

On Sunday morning Sep 23, the hotel folks will depart toward Three Rivers where we will rendezvous with the campers and probably get some breakfast (still working on the details there). We will take 198 and 180 into Cedar Grove. We are working out the details re food (lunch) stops. Also researching Ten Mile Road in that area which looks awesome on the map, but we need to see if we can get info on road condition.

The return trip is at the discretion of participants. Some might choose to stay another night up in the Cedar Grove area, but that's up to you. I have to get back to LA Sunday night. We have the option to backtrack much of the same route we drove in, or go a more direct route west on 180, south on 63, west (via whatever road the GPS says is best since it's all flat and boring there anyway) toward the 99 freeway South, then down into LA from there.

    HOTEL INFO:
Those who wish to drive up on Friday night Sep 21 and stay over in scenic Bakersfield are encouraged to make reservations at Bakersfield Hilton Garden Inn. Right now, the AAA rate is $89/night and is refundable up until 48 hours before arrival. If you pay in full in advance, they have a slightly lower rate. On Saturday Sep 22, we encourage reservations at the Fairfield Inn Visalia Sequoia. Right now, the AAA rate is $125/night and is refundable up until 48 hours before arrival. They also have a slightly lower rate for if you pay in full in advance.

I have no idea what the camping will be like, but that's up to the campers to figure out. Michael Yoo will hopefully have some more info to provide on that. And of course, anyone who wants to take initiative, look into the camping options, and share that info with all of us, PLEASE feel free to do so!

Pace on this entire trip will be moderate to easy going. None of us know these roads so this is more of a scenic cruise with occasional bouts of spiritedness.

So, let's go have an adventure!

Looks like an awesome trip! I used to camp in Kings Canyon often when I lived in CA.

NOTE: Attendees will need a park pass. The minimum you will need is a 7 day vehicle pass ($35) for Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks and Hume Lake District of Sequoia National Forest/Giant Sequoia National Monument. National Parks Annual passes are also good here (and for all other National Parks in the US). You can pay at the park or you can purchase passes in advance at www.yourpassnow.com. Hint: Get it in advance.

Yes, Sep 22 happens to be a "free" entry day. But since we will also be in the parks on Sep 23, you still have to buy a pass anyway.

You can also get an annual pass if you think you may be going to any other National Parks in the country within the next 12 months. I can not stress enough how beautiful our National Parks are and how very important their preservation is. The annual pass at $80 a year is a bargain and helps contribute to making the lands available to enjoy now as well as preserving these precious resources for the future. And who knows... maybe we will need to have an EOQ/S2KCA-LA Zion and Bryce Canyon tour before this time next year. Stranger things have happened.

This sounds like a wonderful trip. I know that I would like to revisit those parks. It’s been a long time since I’ve been there. These roads look like they would be fun.

BUMP! Doing this September 21-23. If you aren't interested in overnight the 21st, you can always just drive up to Bakersfield early Saturday morning and meet up with us there. And if you can only do Saturday, you can always just drive home from Visalia. Long day, for sure, but doable.

                  Cool.

Right now it looks like you, me, Jason, and Mario are booked. Abed and Martin are signed up, but I don't know if they have rooms yet.

Six cars for something like this would be way fun.

Rats! As much as I would love to come out for this trip, we are going to be in Los Angeles the following weekend. Karen has a conference to attend downtown. I sure with that I could join you for this trip. I hope that it is a successful one for you all.

                                    https://goo.gl/maps/FYJBGnAJpEU2
Roll out at 9am. Be in the parking lot at 8:30am.
Leaving Hilton Garden Inn, going through Kernville, go to Sherman pass (photo opp and stretch break), backtrack to Roads End on MH99 for lunch stop (about 3 hours from start), continue to Trail of 100 Giants for a short hike on a paved path, then continue on to Fairfield Inn Visalia. Total 200 miles. About 5-ish hours driving, not including stops. For those in need, there will be gas near Springville which is about 155 miles from our start.

                                    This is SUNDAY:
                                    https://goo.gl/maps/hyzjUitmyAn
Roll out at 8:30am. Be in the parking lot at 8:00am.
Leave Fairfield Inn Visalia, head to General Sherman Tree (stop and check out the tree), then to Hume Lake Snack Shop for lunch, on to Cedar Grove to stop at the visitor center and enjoy scenery. To that point, it's about 3-ish hours driving time plus however long we stop for lunch and to see stuff. Then head back toward home by whatever best route google maps says, but there is a link below for suggested route (about 5 hours).

This is the suggested path back to LA (obviously adjust it to your home):
                                    https://goo.gl/maps/4ZSMPLeWMtA2

                                    1) Bring cash - just in case
                                    2) Water and light snacks (in a cooler bag advised)
                                    3) A folding chair (in case we stop in remote places for breaks or snack stops)
                                    4) Sunscreen
                                    5) Charged walkie-talkies (if you own them) and your charger
                                    6) Full tank of gas!
                                    7) Bring a jacket! It WILL be cold in the trees and higher elevations.

You're gonna love the Sierras Jason if you haven't been yet. Hume Lake/General Sherman/Kings Canyon NP are my old stomping grounds on the weekends when I was based at NAS Lemoore.

It's too bad you won't have time to visit Crystal Cave or spend more time in the Sequoia NP just looking, hiking, and driving with the top down. There's lots to see and do. Have fun and take lots of pics!
