  • Sunday July 11, 2021. Pie & Palomar Drive (with EOQ Drive group)

Alright, we are set! We are doing a run for pie, then up to the observatory, and then off to a winery.

Our EOQ Drive is back and we're going for Pie in July! Also a quick drive up to the observatory, and for any intrepid adventurers who want to join in... a stop at Cougar Winery for a light meal and/or tasting.

Technically, this Q2 EOQ is happening in Q3, but only by two weeks, so we won't sweat it. Well, maybe we will sweat it since it will be in July. BUT we'll make up for it with lots of twisty roads and Julian Pie (with ice cream!) in Santa Ysabel.

Maps and more details to follow, but First Leg will be a nice drive from the Pechanga casino area, through Pala, up South Grade Road, down East Grade Road, across Mesa Grande Road, then into Santa Ysabel. After a stop for pie, Leg Two has us head back the direction we came, but this time we stop at the Observatory (assuming it's open) for quick pics and then down again, through Pala, and across Rice Road / Rainbow Valley Road back toward our starting point. Those wanting to bounce can take off from there. Anyone wanting to hang and socialize a bit, then join us for an extremely boring drive over to the very picturesque Cougar Winery where we can sit on the patio and enjoy a bit of what we haven't been able to do properly for a very long time.

    DATE: Sunday July 11, 2021
MEET UP TIME: 8am (subject to minor adjustment as we get closer to the date)
MEET UP POINT: Gas station. Pechanga Service station at 45000 Pechanga Pkwy, Temecula, CA 92592

In 12 days, there will be pie.
And for it, we will not die,
          but will most certainly try
To enjoy a beautiful blue sky
While down the twisty roads we fly.

We have a tight group set for Sunday. 15 cars right now confirmed, so we will have 2 drive groups for sure. We have a few people still on the fence so it might grow to as much as 20 in the next 24 hours, but we generally stop additions at noon the day before the drive.

Gonna be a warm one. Bring water. And a hat. And sunscreen.

17 cars definitely confirmed, and 2 more are being flakey. (gah... only thing that should be flakey is a pie) So we might have 19, but I think it will be 17. Considering how danged hot it's going to be, I'm surprised we got that many to brave the temps.

It went great today! We ended up with 20 cars after all. Hot day, but much fun was had. Drone footage from one attendee soon to be posted.

In 1912, a law passed in Nebraska where drivers in the country at night were required to stop every 150 yards, send up a skyrocket, and wait eight minutes for the road to clear before proceeding cautiously, all the while blowing their horn and shooting off flares.

Great seeing you too, John! Thank you for coming! It was a nice day and I'm glad everyone seemed to have a good time.

I saw a lot of smiling faces, so that is either a sign that the pie was really good or the drive was really good, or perhaps a bit of both. Jason told me later that group 2 actually got a little bit of rain on them just after group 1 rolled out. How wild. There was like ONE cloud in the entire sky and I'm amazed that any of the precipitation from it reached the ground at all.

Some trivia from our Sunday drive:

                          1) I probably killed a squirrel (all I know is I saw him tumbling behind my car... didn't squish him, but I don't think my lip protector/splitter did him any favors).
                          2) I saw one deer and he ran alongside the road before jumping in front of me. Thankfully I did have plenty of time to slow for it and get on the radio to warn others. Deer often travel in groups.
                          3) I have no idea what that HUGE bird was after we left Julian pie, but I was happy he opted to walk off the road when I honked the horn at him a bunch.
                          4) There were skateboarders on East Grade Road. YIKES!
                          5) The area of brush that had obviously recently burned on Highway 79 was pretty clearly started by a vehicle fire. This is why I always carry at least one fire extinguisher in my car.
                          6) I LOVE PIE!!!
                          7) I also love the new Midland radios that Jason and I now have in our S2000s.
8 ) It rained on group two before they left Julian Pie. Apparently one cloud let loose a few dozen drops which all landed on Jason's car.
                          9) I was not late arriving. Please record this somewhere because it's historically significant. lol
                          10) Always be prepared to come around a corner and find something BIG stopped in the middle of the road, like a motorcycle or a pick up truck or just a big ass rock.
                          11) Some motorcyclists seem to have a death-wish, and double yellows in blind corners or cresting hills mean nothing to them.
