  • Q4 (sort of) EOQ Drive -- Jan 2 2022

Q4 EOQ Drive is tentatively scheduled for Sunday January 2, 2022, weather permitting. More details as I have them. We are strongly favoring Malibu at this time, but a trip for Burritos in Borrego is a possibility.

    Sunday January 2, 2022
    9:30am meet up
    End by 1pm

This is all dependent on the results of our recon drive the day before. The recent rains could give us reason to change the route.

Meet up point is at the parking lot for a bus stop on Civic Center Way in Malibu.

Please be considerate of the neighbors and the church near where we are meeting. Keep the noise down. Approach this location from Malibu Canyon Road (DO NOT TURN ONTO WINTER CANYON ROAD -- that's the wrong way; that is exit only), turn left onto Vista Pacifica, then left into the driveway, and left into the parking lot. Here are the GPS coordinates for it: 34.0369384, -118.6988714

Bring: 1) Full tank of gas. 2) Sunscreen. 3) Water. 4) MASK for ALL participants. 5) FRS walkie-talkies if you have them.

If you get out of your car for ANY reason, PUT YOUR MASK ON! No exceptions.

The latest strain of the Covid-19 virus being unbelievably easy to catch (omicron), we are going to skip doing a lunch stop.

Our path will take us North on PCH. We will turn right on Latigo Canyon, right onto Kanan Dume, left onto Mulholland Highway, right to continue Mulholland and Decker Canyon, left to stay on Decker Canyon and all the way down to PCH. At PCH we will turn right and head to Leo Carrillo state beach and enter the parking lot on the right. We will drive straight at the visitor info booth and continue underneath PCH to the beach side toward the furthest possible parking area where we will stop for 15 minutes to stretch, enjoy the view, then take off before we have to pay for parking. (Bring $3 just in case!)

From Leo Carrillo beach, we will continue north on PCH. At Yerba Buena Road (you’ll recognize it because it’s immediately after Neptune’s Net) we will turn right. Follow that as it becomes Little Sycamore Canyon Road and then dead ends into Mulholland Highway. We will then turn left, and then left again to stay on Mulholland. When Decker splits off, we turn RIGHT to stay on Mulholland, then left at the next stop sign to stay on Mulholland. We will make a left onto Kanan Dume Road, go about 5.7 miles, then turn right onto Cornell Road. We will stop for potty break at Paramount Ranch. 15 minute stop at most.

We will head back to Cornell Road, make a right, and then a left onto Mulholland Highway. Right onto Malibu Canyon Road to Piuma. We will turn left on Piuma Road. This is where things still need to be decided. We know Tuna Canyon Road is closed, so perhaps we will come down Las Flores instead. More info here when we have it. End spot of the drive will be determined once we do the recon.

Due to heavy rains causing rock slides, localized flooding, and damage to some roads in Malibu, we are postponing. It just isn't safe right now. Tentative rescheduled date is Sunday, January 9th.

Rock slides? I'll take six inches of snow any day over that!

Yeah, those will get your attention, no doubt.

We have gotten a lot of rain, but all at once (which doesn't help with the drought situation either). The ground really can't soak it all in, and so the run-off erodes away the soil holding the rocks in place. Gravity takes over and then things get really messy.

Having S2KDays in SoCal in 2018 really worked out well considering that shortly after that we had a crap ton of fires, followed by a crap ton of mudslides. Several roads that we drove on have been closed since then and I question if several of them will ever re-open. The Snake is closed. Most of Mulholland Highway down at the west end where it meets PCH is closed. Tuna Canyon Road is closed. So much lost. We have adjusted and re-routed to other fun roads since then, but even those get seasonally impacted when it does rain.

I find it very strange that anyone would click "like" of the pictures above of the damage due to recent storms. Nobody with any compassion wants to see anyplace damaged, much less someplace where people live.

I see the like as more of a "thanks for posting." I think people click "like" simply to have the browser provide more similar content.
I was able to follow the Oroville Dam news story by "liking" a You Tube post and watching further posts.

It's official: we need to postpone at least two weeks. Leo Carillo Beach is closed, so no photo stop. Latigo is a mess, Decker is worse, and Yerba Buena is closed. I mean, that leaves us with slim pickings.

But we got to see some dolphins on our recon, so not all was lost. Malibu is really nice when it's quiet.
